Quietus of the War's End

🔮 Wondrous Item (relic) Artifact
requires attunement by a spellcaster who seeks lasting peace
Charges: 7 (regains at dawn)

A teardrop-shaped crystal suspended in a silver frame set into a band of tempered iron. Olive-branch motifs are etched in gold along its rim, intertwining with runic sigils that glow faintly when near true peace. The crystal shimmers with a pale blue light, shifting in rhythm with the wielder's heartbeat. The relic feels warm to the touch, and its surface ripples like water when spoken to with a vow of peace. It weighs about two pounds and carries a quiet hum, as if listening for the next moment where war might end.

Root of Peace The relic contains the root cause of conflicts. When you spend 1 charge, you can discern the principal grievance fueling an ongoing war within 1 mile. The DM reveals one true cause, limited to what is publicly known or matters of record; additional or hidden causes remain at the DM's discretion.
Memory Weave Expending 2 charges, you may cast Modify Memory (5th-level) on a single creature you can see within 60 feet. You may erase or implant a single memory related to the war's cause. The change is effectively permanent unless a greater magic reverses it (as per the spell).
Peacebound Shroud Expending 3 charges, you shed a 60-foot-radius aura of peace for 1 minute. Creatures within the aura that would take hostile actions must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw; on a failed save, their aggression is quelled and they treat peaceful options as preferable for the duration (Calm Emotions effects apply). The aura ends early if an act of violence occurs within its radius.
End War (Ultimate) Expending 7 charges allows you to cast Wish to end a currently ongoing war by erasing its root cause from history. The DM determines the exact scope (typically a region affected by the war). If granted, active hostilities cease and the root cause is removed from recorded history and widely remembered narratives for the duration of the effect, effectively preventing the same grievances from fueling conflict for a substantial period. This ability can only be used to end an actual war; misusing it carries a cosmic price (the DM may adjudicate consequences).

Lore

The Quietus is said to have been forged by a circle of sages and embers of a former warlord who chose peace over conquest. Embedded within its heart is a fragment of the world’s memory of every grievance that has ever sparked bloodshed. Legends say that when enough truth is laid bare and enough oaths are spoken in earnest, the relic can rewrite a war’s history—erasing the root cause from memory and from the pages of history alike, guiding civilizations toward reconciliation rather than ruin.

History

Discovered in the ruins of a shattered embassy after a century-long war, the Quietus passed through many hands: a scholar-king who used it to broker a fragile treaty; a caravan master who shielded it from those who would weaponize it; and a hermit who kept it safe until a new era of diplomacy began. It has never been wielded to its fullest potential without great cost, and its use has always foretold a silence after the storm—sometimes lasting long enough for empires to rebuild, other times revealing how fragile peace can be.
