Compass of Secrets

๐Ÿ”ฎ Wondrous Item (compass) Very Rare
requires attunement by a spellcaster
Charges: 7 (regains at dawn)

A compact brass compass about 2 inches across, set into a disk of polished ivory. Its needle is a slender silver arc with a sapphire hub, and delicate runes trace along the rim. The casing is etched with constellations and the symbol of an eye half-closed, forever watching for hidden things. When held, a pale blue glow traces across the dial, and the needle hums softly as it seeks the unseen.

Secret Direction The compass always points toward the nearest secret within 1 mile of you. A secret is an undisclosed location, hidden door, concealed vault, or unrevealed artifact. If more than one secret lies within range, the needle points to the closest. If no secrets lie within 1 mile, the needle spins.
Clue from the Compass As an action, you may expend 1 charge to receive a cryptic clue about the nearest secret within 1 mile. The DM provides a hint in the form of a short sentence or couplet. Interpreting the clue may require an Intelligence (Investigation) or Wisdom (Perception) check with DC 15.
Precision Needle For 1 minute, you may expend 2 charges to learn the exact direction and distance to the nearest secret within 1 mile. The distance is given in feet to the nearest 10 feet, and the bearing is precise. While this effect lasts, you gain advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to move toward that secret.
Wardwise Insight Expending 3 charges as an action lets you sense magical barriers that would impede reaching the secret. You learn whether a ward, spell, or other magical effect stands between you and the secret and the school of magic involved (abjuration, illusion, enchantment, etc.). This is informative only; bypassing barriers requires normal methods or magic.

Lore

The Compass of Secrets was forged in the twilight between truth and illusion by the Arcane Cartographers, a guild long vanished from common memory. It was said to be tempered in starlight and quenched in whispers. Legends claim that it does not seek gold or glory, but the nearest secret that someone wishes to obscure from the worldโ€”a truth, a doorway, or a relic that should remain hidden. Many who have carried it have followed its pull into discoveries that changed the fate of kingdoms, while others vanished after courting powers they were not prepared to face.

History

Forged by the enigmatic smith-scribe known only as Lythariel, the compass passed through the hands of mapmakers, exiled wageslaves, and royalty. It guided a pirate to the long-lost vault beneath a drowned city, and later steered a court archivist to a concealed passage within a ruined library. The compass has been missing for decades, rumored to lie within the crumbling ruins of a temple dedicated to truth and secrecy, waiting for a seeker who dares to follow its pull again.
