Key of the Unseen Threshold

๐Ÿ”ฎ Wondrous Item (key) Rare
requires attunement by a spellcaster
Charges: 7 (regains at dawn)

A slender iron key with a pale blue gemstone set in its head, etched with tiny sigils of doors opening. The metal glints faintly as if reflecting a doorway that only exists in imagination, and the runes pulse with a soft azure light when you approach a locked door. The key hums in your hand and whispers the word 'threshold' when you draw near a door you have never opened before.

Unfamiliar Door Unlock The item has 7 charges. You can expend 1 charge to cause the key to instantly unlock a door you have never opened with it before. The door must be within 60 feet and not protected by an effect that expressly forbids bypassing locks (such as a planar gate). The door opens as if unlocked and can be traversed normally. The door remains locked again if closed, unless you use this ability on a different door other than the one you just opened. Each door can be unlocked only once by this effect per long rest.
Door Sense The bearer can use an action to sense within 60 feet whether a door is locked and what kind of lock it has (mechanical, arcane, or other) if the door is not already known to be unlocked. This does not reveal traps or hidden mechanisms, only the lock type and whether it's currently secured.
Ward-Finder Glow The key glows faintly when near doors that are warded by magic and reveals a basic indication of the ward type (arcane lock, glyph of warding, ward spell). This is a passive sense that does not reveal precise spell details.

Lore

Forged by a circle of locksmith-sorcerers who believed every door is a universe of its own, the Key of the Unseen Threshold learned the language of thresholds as they formed in the world. It wandered through countless ruins and libraries, always seeking doors that had yet to yield to a key. Legends say a master navigator once used it to slip through city gates that refused all other travelers, guided by the whispering sigils etched into the key's head.

History

The key has crossed many hands: a rogue who trusted it to bypass cunning locks, a scholar who documented every door it opened, and a prince who used it to traverse palace corridors unseen. It surfaced in a ruined vault where a door to a forgotten wing guarded the last of its wards, and since then it has traded hands among collectors, treasure seekers, and those who walk between realms of door and passage.
