Lore & Description
Appearance
A small ant with a rounded, bulbous lump on its thorax that glows faintly pale green when readying a strike. Its exoskeleton bears a mottled blend of dark browns and sickly greens, and a foul, chemical tang lingers in the air around it. The lump carries a potent toxin; when threatened, it can eject a poison cloud in its spit, and when its distant threats close, the lump can violently Burst, spawning four tiny, equally venomous antlings that skitter with alarming speed.
Behavior & Origins
Lumpback Ants dwell in dim, damp burrows beneath leaf litter. The lump on their backs is a gland that stores a viscous toxin; they use it to deter larger predators and to seed conflict within their colony. When the lump bursts, it sacrifices its longer-range threat for a rapid swarm tactic, forcing enemies to contend with multiple, tiny foes at once before they must retreat or risk being overwhelmed. They are often found near ant colonies or in ruined ruins where moisture and organic matter collect, giving them cover to ambush intruders.
