Bleedbound

⚔️ Weapon (longsword) Rare
requires attunement by a spellcaster
Damage 1d8 slashing
finesse versatile (1d10) special
Charges: 7 (regains at dawn)

A blade of tempered midnight steel, V-shaped fuller running along its length and a subtle red gleam along the edge. The pommel houses a small onyx gem that seems to pulse when blood is spilled nearby. The grip is wrapped in dark crimson leather that feels slightly warm to the touch, as if the weapon drinks the life around it.

Magic Edge This longsword is a +1 magic weapon, granting a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it.
Bleeding Wound Wounds inflicted by Bleedbound begin to bleed and cannot be healed by nonmagical means. When you hit a creature with this weapon, the target starts bleeding for 1 minute. At the start of each of the target's turns during the bleeding, it takes 1d4 necrotic damage. While bleeding, the target cannot regain hit points from nonmagical effects, and any HP regained by magical effects is reduced by 2 (minimum 0). The bleeding ends early if the target is cured by a spell that removes a curse (such as Remove Curse or Greater Restoration) or by a spell that expressly cures the bleeding; once cured, normal healing functions normally again.
Sanguine Burst As an action, you may expend 2 charges to unleash a Blood Burst. Your next successful hit with this weapon before the end of your next turn deals an extra 2d6 necrotic damage, and the target begins bleeding for an additional 1 minute (stacking with existing bleeding). If the attack misses, the charges are spent with no effect.
Curse. The Bleedbound is a blade of hungering crimson steel. Wounds it inflicts refuse to mend naturally, and the blade’s presence gnaws at the bearer’s will. While attuned, you crave blood and may suffer a mounting pressure to press the attack. The curse can be lifted only by a remove curse or greater restoration spell; until then, the curse makes healing slower and ties the blade’s influence to the wielder’s fate.

Lore

Forged in the shadowed forges where crimson metal drinks the memory of battles, Bleedbound was tempered with the blood of a slain war-god. It remembers every wound it has carved and macabrely believes that healing is a betrayal to its nature. Legends tell of wielders who grew bolder, then saner, as the blade fed on ruptured life.

History

Bleedbound has passed from mercenary hands to tyrant lords, then into the ruins of a shattered keep where it lay dormant for a century. Each bearer swore they would master the blade, yet each found themselves chasing their own fate as the weapon’s curse pulled at their veins. The blade resists being sheathed while wounds bleed, and its draw is said to be irresistible to those who have seen too much bloodshed.
