Promises Bound. The Vowbound Demon is immune to non-oath-based damage. To harm it, a source must be under a spoken binding promise (an oath) to harm the demon, witnessed by at least one ally. A vow lasts for 1 round and must be renewed if the demon is still engaged. If no vow is active, attempts to deal damage against the demon have no effect. The demon can sense when a vow is spoken within 60 feet and may attempt to end the vow with its action.

Actions

Multiattack. The demon makes three attacks: one Bite and two Claws.
Bite. Melee weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d10+3) piercing damage.
Claw. Melee weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6+3) slashing damage.
Tail. Melee weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8+3) bludgeoning damage. If the target is Medium or smaller, it must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Legendary Actions

The demon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The demon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Detect. The demon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.
Invoke Promise. The demon prompts a binding vow from one creature it can see within 60 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or be compelled to consider the vow's terms; failure results in the target taking a disadvantage on the next saving throw against a vow made to the demon.
Bonded Echo (Costs 2 Actions). The demon channels a shard of its binding into the air. Each creature within 10 feet of it that can hear it must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or suffer 1d6 psychic damage and have disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn.

Lore & Description

Appearance

A demon that appears as a sinewy, horned figure cloaked in shadow and ash. Its skin is obsidian-black with a subtle iridescent sheen, tracing sigils that shift like living ink. Iron-gray horns curve from its skull, and its eyes burn with molten gold. Across its chest hangs a heavy chain ending in a rusted lock engraved with old promises. When it speaks, its voice sounds like a whisper wrapped in chains, offering bargains that feel binding even as they threaten to sever the will of those who listen. The demon thrives on broken oaths and the erosion of trust, preying on those who forget the weight of their word.

Behavior & Origins

Born from a failed contract between a mortal and a binding demon, the Vowbound Demon exists to test the integrity of promises. It travels through mortal realms, seeking to turn honest vows into perilous debts and to prove that even the purest oath can become a weapon if wielded by the wrong demon. The creature cannot be harmed by ordinary means unless a vow to harm it is spoken and witnessed. This makes it dangerous in any encounter: the players must craft, witness, and maintain a binding promise to strike true. In legend, the only way to banish a Vowbound Demon is to forge a higher-priority oath that binds the demon to truth and mercy, breaking its grip on the world by making promises that cannot be exploited.
