Swarm. This creature is a mass of hungry scarabs. It occupies a space of its own and has resistance to effects that target a single creature. It can be affected only by area effects that specify piercing, slashing, or bludgeoning damage; damage that targets the swarm as a whole, such as a fireball, affects it in full.
Limited Appetite. The swarm eats living creatures that are not insects, structures, or undead. It will ignore creatures that fit those categories and will flee if attacked by them or if it cannot find suitable prey.
Step Stones. Insects can use the Scarab Swarm as stepping stones to move through difficult terrain. A creature of Tiny size or smaller can move through the swarm's space as if it were normal terrain, counting its movement normally.

Actions

Multiattack. The scarab swarm makes two Bite attacks.
Bite. Melee weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 5 (1d6+2) piercing damage. The swarm tries to swarm onto the target and bite. If the target is Medium or smaller and is not an insect, structure, or undead, the scarabs attempt to crawl onto the target's body.
Overwhelm (Grapple Attempt). Melee weapon Attack: +0 to hit, reach 0 ft., one creature. Hit: 0 (0d0) none damage. If a target is struck by the swarm, the target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be grappled by the scarabs and considered restrained as the beetles crawl over and attempt to eat them. While restrained in this way, the target is considered to be under continuous pressure from the swarm; on each of the swarm's turns, it can attempt another grapple with a new Strength check to escape.
Split. The scarab swarm splits into two or more separate swarms. The number of resulting swarms is chosen when the action is used, with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4. Each resulting swarm has HP equal to floor(18 / N), where N is the number of swarms created. For example, splitting into 2 yields HP 9 each, splitting into 3 yields HP 6 each, and splitting into 4 yields HP 4 each. All resulting swarms occupy space within 5 feet of each other.
Merge (Combine with another Swarm). If an allied Scarab Swarm is within 5 feet, this action merges the two swarms into a single swarm. The resulting swarm has HP equal to the sum of both swarms' current HP. The merged swarm retains the swarm's abilities.

Lore & Description

Appearance

A writhing, glittering cloud of tiny scarabs skitters and clambers over itself in a living, bronze-green tide. Each beetle bears a dull, amber carapace that glints in the light, and the swarm emits a soft buzzing as they move in a coordinated, almost hive-mind pattern. They favor living prey with soft flesh and warmth, crawling in a hungry tide to overwhelm their target. They cannot digest insects, structures, or undead, and will avoid those targets or flee if pressed by them. When they successfully attack, they attempt to crawl atop their prey, funneling into cracks and seams to bite and gnaw at the victim from within, forcing a contested strength save to end the threat.

Behavior & Origins

Scarabs that feed as a mass are a horror of the desert and ruined cities. They travel in dim, shimmering swarms that glow faintly with the heat of the sun. They ignore creatures that are not suitable prey and will retreat if pressed by enemies they cannot consume. A successful bite from the Scarab Swarm is a claustrophobic, creeping threat as the beetles try to take up residence in the target's flesh, forcing a strong will to escape the tugging, pinching mass.
